Timeline Course // Part Two. Family Portraits

Tips For Brides

One of the most asked questions regarding the timeline is, “how much time do you need for family portraits?” Everyone has a story of how they had to sit for hours at a wedding while the family pictures were being taken.

Not at your wedding, my friend! Not at your wedding!

How? Check it…

Step one: Make sure to provide your photographer with a detailed list of the groups you want photographed. Keep in mind that larger groups do take longer to organize, and people tend to scatter after the ceremony. To remedy that…

Step two: Remind those people the night before that they need to stay seated after the ceremony and not leave. It’s also helpful to have a family member (or even one from each side) on hand to find missing family members since your photography team doesn’t always know who people are. 🙂

Step three: As you’re making your family portrait list, schedule in 3-5 minutes for each large group. Smaller groups can be gathered and photographed in 2-3 minutes.

We treasure our family portraits from our wedding and would never want you to cut your list in a trade for time, but something to remember — if your family picture list is getting longer than you’d like, we’ve had great success just doing the immediate family portraits after the ceremony and following up with extended family and friend groupings at the reception. Brides and grooms traditionally go table to table to greet their guests. This is a great time to get those family portraits that are important to you but also not spend more time than you’d like away from your guests. We’ve also seen our couples have great fun doing a photo race — The DJ sets one song and you and your beloved run around to each table to eventually take a group photo with every person present. It’s pretty great.

Step four: Smile your biggest all-teeth smile when your guests say in amazement — “you’re back so soon!” 🙂

We hope that you’ve been enjoying these tips and finding them helpful!
