“The sun has burst the sky
Because I love you
And the river its banks.
“The sea laps the great rocks
Because I love you
And takes no heed of the moon dragging it away
And saying coldly ‘Constancy is not for you’.
The blackbird fills the air
Because I love you
With spring and lawns and shadows falling on lawns.
“The people walk in the street and laugh
I love you
And far down the river ships sound their hooters
Crazy with joy because I love you.”
Jenny Joseph wrote this poem. I don’t know her inspiration, but when I read it, Sarah and Vance come first to my mind. They married in the brightest morning of the year. Not a cloud in the sky, the full sun shone down on the outdoor chapel as the two committed their lives to the other. Afterwards, we climbed a green-grass hill to the highest point around, and tread softly down by the river. No ship horns, but runners shouted their “congratulations, y’all!”, and “you’re beautiful!” And Sarah & Vance really were. They fit in the bright sun — nothing hidden. All illuminated. Happy first day of marriage, Ivory family!!!
